The Benefits of Waterjet Cutting

VERY VERSATILE
Cuts extremely hard, reflective and nonconductive materials including:

  • steel, titanium and other metals
  • plastic
  • glass
  • ceramics
  • wood
  • composites
  • granite, marble and other stone
  • rubber

HIGHLY PRECISE
Using a computer-controlled stream of water moving at Mach 2.5 (1875mph), materials as hard as titanium or as soft as foam can be cut within, plus or minus, 0.005".

LOW COST
The OMAX waterjet machining center uses your existing DXF files or other CAD drawings.

FAST TURNAROUND
With the ability to work from you computer drawings, the preparation time is minimized since there is no wait for fixtures and dies to be made.

NO HEAT BUILD UP
No heat is generated in the process, so materials like copper, brass aluminum, glass, rubber and plastic will not melt during cutting.

SMOOTH FINISH
Waterjet cuts are smooth-similar to fine sandblasted finish. This often eliminates the need for any secondary machining on complex flat parts.

NO MINIMUM ORDER
Low startup costs allow for inexpensive, highly accurate production for quantities as small as one item.

ENVIRONMENTALLY FRIENDLY
Using just water in the process, and possibly some garnet for abrasive, makes for a clean operation.

LESS WASTE
We can make cuts very close tot the edge of the material, so less waste is produced.

THE OMAX WATERJET MACHINING CENTER SHOULD BE CONSIDERED AS AN ALTERNATIVE TO DIE CUTTING, CNC MACHINING, LASER CUTTING, EDM AND PLASMA ARC CUTTING.

How It Works
Two methods of waterjet cutting can be used with the OMAX: "Waterjet" cutting and "Abrasive jet" cutting.  Waterjet cutting handles soft or thin materials; Abrasive Jet cuts through hard or thick materials with the addition of garnet abrasive.  Both use water pressurized up to 50,000 psi.  The water is forced at almost three times the speed of sound through a small opening made of ruby and is directed at the material to be cut.  The thicker the material, the longer the cut takes.  We have successfully cut through 8" thick steel and 6-1/2" hard rubber.

Request An Estimate/Getting Started

We will be happy to provide a free estimate on using the OMAX waterjet machining center to produce your project.  Our specialty is short-run custom work of 1000 pcs or fewer.

To efficiently produce the piece or parts you need:
1. Provide 2-D CAD data of your part in DXF or DWG format drawn to scale (1:1).
2. Provide a detailed part print to be used by our engineering team.
3. If possible, supply a piece of scrap material for test cutting along with the material for producing the part(s).  (We will supply the material, but please specify who is to supply the material in the quote/estimate request.)
